Basic Austenitic Steels
X12CrMnNiN17-7-5 – 1.4372 / 201 / SUS201 / Z12CMN17-07Az
X12CrMnNiN17-7-5 – 1.4372 stainless steel belongs to the group of austenitic stainless steels and is widely recognized as a cost-effective alternative to higher nickel grades. Commonly known as AISI 201 or SUS201, this material offers a structure similar to AISI 304, but with a reduced nickel content, resulting in a more economical solution. Part of the nickel is replaced by manganese and nitrogen, which helps maintain mechanical properties while reducing material cost.
This steel typically contains approximately 16–18% chromium, 3.5–5.5% nickel, 5–7% manganese, and small amounts of nitrogen. This composition provides good strength and moderate corrosion resistance. However, its corrosion resistance is lower than that of AISI 304, making it more suitable for indoor or less aggressive environments rather than highly corrosive conditions.
One of the key advantages of X12CrMnNiN17-7-5 steel is its ability to combine high strength with good formability. During cold working, the material can increase in strength, allowing it to maintain sufficient durability even in thin sections. In addition, it offers good surface quality and a bright appearance, making it suitable for applications where aesthetic considerations are important.
The steel also exhibits good weldability, allowing it to adapt easily to various manufacturing processes. However, its use in environments exposed to continuous outdoor conditions, high humidity, or salt should be carefully evaluated.
Thanks to its cost efficiency, workability, and aesthetic properties, X12CrMnNiN17-7-5 – 1.4372 stainless steel is widely used in decorative and general-purpose applications, offering a balanced solution in terms of both performance and cost.
