Mechanical Grade Stainless Steels
X6CrNi17-1 – 1.4017
X6CrNi17-1 – 1.4017 stainless steel belongs to the group of ferritic stainless steels and stands out by offering a combination of cost-effectiveness and adequate corrosion resistance. This grade is generally considered an improved version of AISI 430, with the addition of a small amount of nickel, which enhances certain mechanical and forming properties while maintaining a cost advantage.
Its chemical composition typically includes approximately 16–18% chromium and low levels of nickel. The high chromium content forms a protective oxide layer on the surface, providing resistance against corrosion. However, compared to austenitic stainless steels such as 304 or 316, its corrosion resistance is more limited. Therefore, it is mainly preferred for indoor applications or mildly corrosive environments rather than highly aggressive conditions.
One of the key advantages of 1.4017 stainless steel is its good formability and surface quality. In sheet form, it can be easily cut, bent, and shaped, making it highly suitable for mass production processes. Its smooth and aesthetic surface finish also allows it to be used in decorative applications.
Due to its ferritic structure, this steel exhibits magnetic properties. It also has better thermal conductivity compared to austenitic grades. Although its weldability is somewhat limited, it can be welded successfully using appropriate techniques.
From a mechanical standpoint, it offers moderate strength, while its impact resistance is lower than austenitic steels. However, its economic advantage makes it a highly attractive option, especially in large-scale production and cost-sensitive projects.
Overall, X6CrNi17-1 – 1.4017 stainless steel provides a practical and economical solution, combining aesthetic appearance, formability, and sufficient corrosion resistance for a wide range of applications.
