Special Ferritic Steels
X2CrMoTi18-2 – 1.4521 / Z3CDT18-02 / 444 / 2326
X2CrMoTi18-2 – 1.4521 stainless steel is a high-performance ferritic stainless steel grade known for its enhanced corrosion resistance and improved structural stability. Commonly referred to as AISI 444, this material offers superior performance compared to conventional ferritic steels due to its higher alloy content. The addition of molybdenum (Mo) and titanium (Ti) significantly improves both its chemical resistance and microstructural stability.
The chemical composition typically includes approximately 17–19% chromium and 1.7–2.5% molybdenum. Chromium forms a protective oxide layer on the surface, providing resistance against corrosion, while molybdenum enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-containing environments. Titanium stabilizes the structure by binding with carbon, preventing intergranular corrosion and improving performance in welded applications.
One of the key advantages of X2CrMoTi18-2 stainless steel is that it offers corrosion resistance comparable to austenitic grades, while remaining more cost-effective due to the absence of nickel. Its ferritic structure also provides a lower coefficient of thermal expansion, reducing deformation risks in applications exposed to temperature fluctuations.
In terms of mechanical properties, this steel provides moderate strength and sufficient ductility, making it suitable for a wide range of engineering applications. It also offers good formability, particularly in sheet form, and can be easily processed. Its weldability is excellent among ferritic steels, thanks to titanium stabilization.
The corrosion resistance of this grade is particularly suitable for humid environments, water exposure, and mildly aggressive chemical conditions. As a result, it is widely used in hot water systems and outdoor applications.
Overall, X2CrMoTi18-2 – 1.4521 (AISI 444) stainless steel is a cost-effective and high-performance material, offering a strong balance of corrosion resistance, durability, and processability across various industries.
