For example, it is referred to as Ck85 in Germany, C85S in certain European standards, and CS80 in the United Kingdom. C85S steel typically contains approximately 0.80% – 0.90% carbon. This relatively high carbon content gives the steel excellent hardenability. When appropriate heat treatment processes are applied, the material can achieve very high hardness and outstanding wear resistance. For this reason, it is particularly suitable for components that require cutting performance or are exposed to heavy wear during operation.
This steel responds well to hardening and tempering processes. Hardening significantly increases the surface and overall hardness, while tempering reduces brittleness and results in a more balanced mechanical structure. This combination allows the material to achieve both high hardness and a certain degree of toughness. However, due to its high carbon content, C85S steel may exhibit greater brittleness compared to low-carbon steels, making proper heat treatment procedures especially important.
C85S steel is typically produced in strip, sheet, or bar form and is commonly used in the production of spring steels and cutting tools. Thanks to its high elasticity and strength, it offers reliable performance in components subjected to repeated loads and cyclic stresses. Additionally, its high wear resistance contributes to a long service life in demanding applications.
